Are you using the stock R280 support or the one from Linuxprinting.org?
I use the latter, and it works great for that printer.  See my comments

Important note:  the Gutenprint driver is a back rev from what
distributions (at least Fedora) are using so everytime you do a global
distro update your Gutenprint driver gets updated to a non-working
version.  Just remove the update version and reinstall the RPM you
download from Linuxprinting.org.

And no, I have no idea why the up-rev versions don't include the R280
driver.

Not on a daily basis but I wrote an article for Linux Format magazine
for using color profiles under GIMP and manually adjusting your monitor.
Unfortunately, that issue is not online yet which means I can't post the
article yet.  Maybe you can order a copy - the US seems to be a number
of issues behind if you buy it from the book stores.
