[lug] Ubuntu 9.04 install question

Having a wierd problem instaling Ubuntu 9.04 and would appreciate any
comments, even though I've got 10.xxx on request.
 
The install goes through the hardware selection and language selection menus
with no problems. The request for first user name and password have some dozen
or so characters chopped off at the start of each line. Typing blind does not
work. The terminal works OK with a couple other systems in dumb glass teleype
mode so something is strange in Ubuntu's line images.
 
Any suggestions for get past this problem?
