Maybe not the answer you want but: an Android 2.2 phone. I've used
mine to get around in a number of European cities (I'm in Nuremberg as
I type) to great effect. In most countries you can get pay-as-you-go
SIMs with quite reasonably priced data access, and it all works nicely.
