Please, don't give up on it. I promise you that once you've gotten through the
installation grief (and Debian does give more than it's fair share, I believe)
you will not want to ever go to another distro. It really is that nice.

As for what could be happening:

1) Which video card do you have?
2) Which X server are you using?
3) Could you get me a complete copy of the X startup log (either publicly or
   privately)?

I don't have answers yet, but i will try and find some for you.

Which I am sorry for. On the flip side, I've never seen X fail with Debian,
until now.
