Well, if the system "absolutely, positively, can't ever go down or 
people lose lots of money and start questioning what they get for 
paying your salary" then an 'official server type' motherboard is worth 
every penny.  They really are better supported, even if they are just 
more expensive versions of the consumer grade stuff. (Not, however, in 
my experience.)

If it is just a matter of convenience (damn, i'll have to fix that when 
I get home), you could easily buy 2 consumer grade parts for every 
server grade part, and still save money on most things.

If you want the best of both worlds, cheap and indestructable, go 
refurbished.  I built a 4x400-1MB Cache Xeon w/768MB RAM and 3 SCSI 
controllers, and space for 6 hot swap drives (and trays) for ~ $1300.

Of course a new 2ish GHz setup could put it to bed on most tasks and 
could be built for about the same money from consumer parts.  So it all 
depends on what you want...I wanted a quad box. =]
