Although I have /dev/lp0 and /dev/par0, I don't have /dev/parport0 
either.  The first two are device major number 6 and the last is major 
number 99.  So my guess is you have to make a device node for it (and 
perhaps fiddle to get the ppdev module loaded).

It seems to have plenty of advice about setting configs and reading 
debug output to understand the problem.  (First hit on google for 
scanner parport0, BTW).
