XFCE has been mentioned a lot, and I have used and like that one a
lot.  I moved to Ion (http://modeemi.cs.tut.fi/~tuomov/ion/) late last
year.  It definately takes some getting used to, but I really learned
to love the tabbed interface.  It can be completely keyboard driven,
too.  It helped I had an extra-wide monitor then, but it was good on a
normal one, too.  If you can't go all the way to ratpoison
(http://www.nongnu.org/ratpoison/) it's a good choice.
